Now Representing Anna Leonhardt
NEW YORK – MARC STRAUS is pleased to announce that Anna Leonhardt has joined the gallery.
Leonhardt’s abstract paintings are at once subdued and muscular. They shimmer as though there is reflective light. Colors are revealed from layers of underpainting that culminate in an actively charged surface.
Now months after her successful first gallery show in April, Leonhardt returns to the city for her second residency to work on a new body of work. Marc Straus, owner of gallery, says, “Anna Leonhardt’s abstract paintings remind me of the intensity and the luminescence of some of the best Abstract Expressionists such as Joan Mitchell and Mark Rothko. As a young collector I began with abstraction, now Leonhardt brings me back to those artists who made rigorous and durable work of beauty.”
Anna Leonhardt (b. 1981 Germany) studied painting and graphic arts under Professor Ralf Kerbach in Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, a school renowned for its highly technical and formal academia. She has shown in Dresden, Berlin and Leipzig and her work is in numerous private and public collections including Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Kunstsammlung des Sächsischen Landtages, art collection of the Saxon Parliament and Ostsächsische Sparkasse Dresden. She lives and works in Berlin.
