Marc Straus began to collect art in his late teens
and by his early twenties was focused on the work
of new unestablished artists. He acquired early
works of art by working second jobs even when in
medical school. Many of the artists have achieved
renown and the Marc and Livia Straus collection
is known worldwide for its prescience and quality.
Numerous articles have been written about the collection
and its history - in ArtNews (Pollack,
Barbara: The Straus Collection. ArtNews, November,
1999, p. 144-146), Contemporanea (Calnek,
Anthony: A scientist Collects. Contemporanea 2:48
- 53, 1989), Westchester Magazine
and elsewhere. In more recent years, the new acquisitions
by Marc and Livia Straus include the first purchases
from several artists who have subsequently achieved
great recognition.
